Move-Out Cleaning Checklist: How to Protect Your Deposit

Before you clean anything

Get the unit fully empty. Cleaning around remaining furniture and boxes doubles the time and guarantees missed spots. Then take dated photos of every room once it is clean, because photos settle disputes faster than any argument.

Pull out your lease or closing paperwork and look for a cleaning clause. Some Tampa Bay property managers name specific requirements such as carpet cleaning receipts or filter replacement.

Kitchen

This is where the largest deductions live.

• Inside and outside the oven, including racks and the door glass
• Inside the refrigerator and freezer, plus the drip tray and door seals
• Inside the dishwasher, filter, and door gasket
• Inside every cabinet and drawer, then the cabinet faces and handles
• Backsplash, hood, and any grease film on upper surfaces
• Sink, faucet, and disposal, with hard water scale removed

Bathrooms

Hard water is the Florida-specific problem here. Chalky shower glass and spotted chrome read as dirty even when they are sanitized, so descaling matters more than scrubbing.

• Shower glass, tile, and grout descaled and rinsed clear
• Tub, toilet including the base and behind it, vanity and sink
• Mirror, light fixtures, and exhaust fan cover
• Inside vanity cabinets and drawers

Everywhere else

Once kitchen and baths are done, work top to bottom through the rest of the home so nothing you knock loose lands on a finished floor.

• Ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, and vent covers
• Blinds, window sills, and interior glass
• Wall scuffs spot-cleaned where the paint allows
• Baseboards, door frames, doors, and switch plates hand wiped
• Closet shelves, rods, and floors
• Vacuum every floor including edges, then mop hard surfaces last

When you are out of time

Moving weeks collapse. If you have to triage, spend your hours on the oven, refrigerator, shower glass, cabinet interiors, and floors. That is where inspectors look first and where deductions are largest.
